Episode 45: Bodie

Bodie — The Voice Runner-Up, "Whisper and the Wind," and What Happens When You Stop Choosing Between Faith and Music

The Southern California singer-songwriter behind 23 million streams and an International Songwriting Competition Grand Prize on touring, calling, and building something that lasts

The Southern California native spent years building a following through his genre-bending blend of alt-pop, indie rock, and hip-hop before landing on NBC's The Voice Season 22, where Blake Shelton called him a "visionary" and he finished runner-up with performances that stopped people mid-scroll. But the real turning point came off-camera: a moment of conviction that led him to sign with Provident Label Group and make the music he'd been circling for years.

The result was Happy to Be Here — a debut EP that sounds nothing like what most people picture when they hear "Christian artist." It draws from Pixies, Blink-182, hip-hop, and R&B, filtered through a faith that's honest about doubt, grief, and the quiet ways God shows up in ordinary life. The lead single "Whisper and the Wind" climbed into the Top 10 on both the Billboard Christian Airplay and Mediabase Audience charts and has now surpassed 23 million global streams. It also made Bodie the first Christian artist in 23 years to win the Grand Prize at the International Songwriting Competition — with judges that included Tom Waits, Paul Stanley, Nancy Wilson, and members of Linkin Park.

In this episode of Hitting the Road, Bodie talks about the tension between building a mainstream audience and stepping fully into his calling, what life on tour actually looks like with a wife and three kids at home, and how the road has shaped the way he writes. We dig into the stories behind his music, what it looks like to make faith-driven art without fencing anyone out, and where Happier to Be Here is taking him next.

If you love artists who refuse to be boxed in and write from somewhere real — Bodie is exactly that.
